Delighting in God.

“God is glorified not only by His glory’s being seen, but by its being rejoiced in. When those that see it delight in it, God is more glorified than if they only see it…. He that testifies his idea of God’s glory [does not] glorify God so much as he testifies also his approbation of it and his delight in it.”-Jonathan Edwards

This is the essence and end of being a creation of God. We exist not only to display and view God’s glory, but to delight and enjoy in it as well. This fact is often lost in reformed communities. We focus so much on the “Glorify God” part of the catechism that we forget about the “…and enjoy him forever” part!

God is a God who should be enjoyed. Psalm 37:4 says, “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart”. Philippians 4:4 says, “Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say Rejoice”.

To Glorify God is the chief end of man. To enjoy him forever is part of how we accomplish this end. This is the ultimate foundation of the Christian faith. Knowing and understanding that begs the question, “How do we enjoy God?” This is a question for the comments section. What are your thoughts?
