Devotion to God
What is devotion? When I read that word the first thing I think of are devotions. Reading the bible once a day for 15 minutes or so, saying a two minute prayer, and then going about your day. But that cannot be the full meaning of that word. What does it mean to be fully devoted to God?
Christians today, myself included, do not have a proper understanding of what it means to be devoted to God. We are a culture of luke warm christians who rarely seek to know God beyond the surface. When I think of someone who is devoted to God, I think of Paul. A man who was radically transformed from a man who persecuted Christ (1) to a man who couldn’t know Christ enough. The more Paul knew God, the more he was persecuted, and the more he wanted to Know God.
“That I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.” -Philippians 3:10.
Paul wanted to share in the sufferings of Christ with the hope that he would know Christ! “…whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. ” -Philippians 3:7
So, what does it mean to be devoted to God. It means we should seek after him with everything in us. We should be fully devoted to following him in every area of our life. We do this with the hope of knowing Christ to the fullest extent that we can while on this earth. While this seems like an obvious answer to the question, how many of us actually live like we know the answer? What are your thoughts on devotion? How do you show devotion to God?
